Photography is so many things to me; it's a way to explore, create, and connect with people. My introduction to photography started with a simple point-and-shoot camera. I took it with me wherever I went, capturing moments of things, places, and people. After completing a general associate's degree at SLCC, I found myself drawn to the visual arts program and decided to pursue a second, more focused, applied associate’s degree in visual arts with an emphasis in photography. Wow, what an experience! All of my instructors were professional photographers themselves and had been in the field for decades. It was there that I was able to learn not only the technical aspects of using a camera, studio lighting, and different styles of photography, but also the history of all of these aspects. Having an interest in people and lighting, I gravitated naturally toward portraiture, and this is where I am most confident and creative. Near the completion of the program at SLCC, I became an assistant to professional photographer David Newkirk. My work for David included setting up and breaking down equipment and second shooting, and this eventually led to him referring me for portraits, events, and weddings when he was unavailable. Over the past decade, I have evolved into my own and continue to evolve as I am always learning, experimenting, and curious. Photography has given me a profound sense of purpose in life. I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences that, in combination with dedication and hard work, have led me to a place where I can make a living doing what I love.
